Some Jersey Quizzes
Last modified September 16, 2009
When you go to Jersey, pick up the local paper and any free ones for tourists and you’ll sometimes find quizzes listed under ‘Pubs and Clubs’. It’s advisable to ring the pub as some of these may be out of date. Here follows the (as far as possible) definitive list established in May 2009, and the fact that it’s considerably shorter than the list which used to adorn the site is a testament to many things; the recession, the rising price of once-cheap alcohol, and the preponderance of karaoke. And please send me details of any others I’ve missed that you know about. Also, during the ’season’ watch out for quizzes in some of the hotels, and certainly the Merton used to run one on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. These appear to be for residents only but who knows?
Monday
- The Lamplighter, 9 Mulcaster Street, St Helier
Tuesday
- The Goose, Beaumont, advertising £50 prize
Wednesday
- The Earl Grey, First Tower: a long-running quiz but didn’t run on the night we attended, despite our checking by phone earlier in the day
Thursday
- The Admiral, St James’s Street, St Helier
- The Royal Hotel, St Martin’s: themed rounds but a hand-around Sudoku puzzle counting for 10 points did us in. Prizes were Jersey lottery scratchcards.
- St Mary’s Country Inn, St Mary’s
Cash prize.
Some comments from guest reviewer Fletch: ‘This popular country inn is situated in the North of the Island and does a good trade in meals. The quiz starts around 9.15 pm, with cash prizes for first, second and third. (Our second prize covered half the taxi fare back to our hotel…) After the quiz there is a 50p a head roll-up in which each player has to answer three questions’. (Mike F.)
