Back to quiz tribes.  This week, it’s People Who Are Not In The Quiz But Nonetheless Shout Out Answers (Shouters for short).  Shouters are usually drunk and may be mob-handed or in groups of two.  They tend to be male but the last group encountered, in a Highgate pub, contained one woman who did not shout but rather stared at people, glassy-eyed, and whispered things to a companion.  Did the QuizMaster do anything about them?  Did he heck.  Like cheating, this is not one of the things which bother QMs.  These are venial sins as far as the QM’s canon goes.  The Seven Deadly Sins, or ‘mortallers’ as we used to call them,  include the following:  i) pointing out people who are cheating; ii) querying an answer; iii) querying a score; iv) querying a result; v) writing in a blog what I thought was a fairly neutral comment that the structure of the pub aids cheating; vi) raising an objection if bar staff or other non-quizzers are included in the jackpot; vii) failing to respect the QM’s ‘authoritah’.

Of course, Shouters do not win quizzes, nor do they contribute much that influences the result, as the questions they know tend to be the more obvious ones.

More next week…
