Thanks to Bible John for alerting us to a Thursday quiz at this location. Drink and cash prizes, apparently.
Isn’t going up to answer a jackpot question the penalty-taking of quizzing? Fierce pressure, rejoicing if you get it right, blame if you don’t. During the week I, against my better judgement, went up for a rollover question worth between 4 and 5 hundred. It wasn’t the usual QM but he had left a few questions in his absence. ‘Cricket, I bet’ I said, trying to guess the subject-matter of the question. No, it was his other big passion, jazz. Oh, great. Some long involved question about a pianist was not helped by a slight ambiguity in the questioner’s pronunciation, which caused a few sniggers. I racked my brains trying to think of someone from the right era but, after some barracking to hurry up, made a guess. ‘Good guess’, said the questioner, ‘and the one I made when the QM asked me the question, but unfortunately wrong. The answer is – ‘ (someone else from the same era). Did anyone in my team know the right answer? No. Anyone in the pub? No. Anyone in the postcode? Probably not. That’s good; I feel better.
Now for the long-awaited solution to the 13 Questions conundrum.
1. Is no-one in charge here? (No man’s land)
2. Divisible by nine. (It’s divided into nine ‘governates’ and regions.)
3. Influential early 1970s hit single. (‘I am woman’)
4. Could be the source of a famous present. (It is one of the few places in the world where Frankincense is obtained, as in the gifts of the Magi.)
5. Controversial drama. (‘The Romans in Britain’)
6. Thought to be named after a neighbouring people who settled the area a long time ago. (The Uman tribe, who also gave their name to Yemen)
7. Minority European language. (Romansh)
8. May face an uncertain future because of question marks over its biggest industry. (Oil)
9. Which way will the cat jump? (Ailuromancy – a form of divination based on the movements of a cat)
10. A picture of somewhere in the location (look back on the post entitled ‘13 Questions II’) (it’s a wadi)
11. The Governor spent a long time looking for him (Turbo Man, sought by the Governor of California in ‘Jingle all the way’)
12. Held possessions in Africa up to the nineteenth century (Zanzibar).
13. We were told that there would be no return to this (Boom and bust)
Oh dear, no-one got this right, not even someone who lives there. The post title gives some of the incorrect answers. Good effort on all your parts, but I obviously made it too hard/obscure …. and in case you are still wondering what the answer is, well, it’s visible in all the odd-numbered questions. Sorry, everybody. Next one, which should finish around Christmas, starts next week and I promise will be easier and might even have a bottle prize…
