Thursday night’s alright for fighting
New Inn, 62 St Mary’s Road. W5 5EX, 020 8840 4279, has a quiz night every Tuesday, with first prize – £50.00. Thanks to ‘Mrs Hayward’ who attended the Ealing Beer Festival, lucky old her, and found that out.
Thanks also to other correspondents who tell me that Tuesday quizzes, Cantaloupe and the George IV (Portugal Street) are no longer running. And.the Punch Tavern’s quiz runs on the first Monday of every month but apparently the third Tuesday as well, and that this quiz is an early one with £10 per team entry fee, but winners get two-thirds of the takings and runners-up one third, so worth taking the risk.
I’ve been to a quiz before which competed with a darts match, and there was also Jim’s legendary whispered quiz in the Red Lion and Sun, Highgate, which competed with the Sunday night singalong. I’ve even been to the worst quiz in the world where every question was about something ‘Freudian’ and we tripped over wires running to dodgy amplifiers for a gig which took place during a break in the quiz. Last Thursday night was something new, however; the quiz was competing with a fight which was brewing all night between two loud punters. We made our excuses and left just as it was breaking out. The pub in question seems to be fast losing its grip and I will be seeking pastures new for Thursday nights from now on. Any suggestions welcomed.
