National symbol(ix)

To the Sir Richard Steele in Belsize Park last night, where we won the quiz but didn’t win it.  Confused?  You will be.  Here are the details I’m pasting in to the Thursday section:

The Sir Richard Steele, 97 Haverstock Hill, NW34PL, 020 7483 1201.
30 mixed questions, 10 or so pictures, jokers assigned by QuizMaster Paul on certain questions.  Get the highest marks in the quiz and it’s not over, as you have to go through two gambling rounds where you can wager your points on a question given to your team.  This process takes longer than the quiz itself.
Prize:  Cash.  Jackpot:  Yes.

In the ‘gambling’ round, we were asked what was the national symbol of Canada, replied that it was the maple leaf only to be told that it was the beaver and consequently lost most of our points.  I won’t say anything about the arithmetical skills of the person who thought we could afford to lose that many and authoritatively shouted out that we were gambling 250.  This debacle sparked something of a debate on what constitutes a national symbol and the only one we could really be sure of was the symbol of the R of I, and it isn’t the bloody shamrock.  I’m sure we must have mentioned nine countries at least, which explains the ix in brackets above (!).  Oh, and the authority for the beaver answer has eluded me.

Farewell and good luck to ‘The Boffin’, a regular character at Robbie’s Sunday night Plough quiz and the Windsor Castle on Wednesdays.  His real name is Anthony but Robbie tends to give everyone a nickname (and has yet to explain ‘The Definitive’).  Anthony emigrates or repatriates himself this week, or has already done so, or has been caught by snow in Heathrow.  And speaking of snow – oh, let’s not, enough already.  I think most quizzes struggled on….
